How to Keep Your Fridge Running Smoothly

Refrigerators are available in a variety of different sizes and shapes. They can be fitted into small areas, like dorm rooms.

Certain models are compatible with smart phones. You can also monitor your fridge remotely and fix any issues when they arise. You can also control them with voice commands.

Noise

Fridges make a wide range of sounds when they are in operation. Certain sounds are more noticeable than others. Before calling a refrigerator repair service, you should determine the source of any sounds you hear.

Rattling

The fridge freezers may rumble when there's not enough space between it and the cabinet or wall or if its sitting at an unlevel angle. It's easy to solve. It's all you need to do is make sure there are at least two inches between the fridge and the wall or cabinet, or you can adjust the leveling screws or legs to raise or lower your fridge.

Hissing

The compressor can make a noise when cooling your food. This is a common sound that is caused by compressor fluid or refrigerant moving through the system. If you're concerned, note how often the compressor is running and contact a refrigerator repair service immediately if it does so more frequently than normal.

Squeaking

Fridges can be noisy if the coils or fan are dirty. If you notice a fridge making squeaking sounds clean the coils and fan with a vacuum cleaner using a brush attachment, a rag and water, or just use dish soap and water. This should be done at least twice each year, or more often in the case of older refrigerators or is heavily used.

Clicking

Frigs may also make click sounds typically caused by ice buildup around the freezer fan. Manual defrosting can solve the problem, but it will return unless a professional is called in.

The clicking can also occur when the fridge is turned off, so make sure to restart it in the event that this happens. The sound could also be caused by an Ice maker if you have one to your fridge, so be sure to ensure this is switched off when you don't need an ice maker that is constantly running.

The hum from your fridge is normal. It may get more intense during certain times of day, and also after heavy stockings or intensive freezer functions. The refrigerator is working harder to keep your food cool, so it will work more quickly. This isn't an indication of a problem.

Dust

Dust in the house is a magnet for dirt, bacteria and other microorganisms, and also traces of household chemical exposures. The tiny particles can trigger allergic reactions and inhalation, and they provide a perfect surface for microbes, such as those that could cause infection if they come into contact with a cut.

Cleaning a refrigerator is impossible but regular cleaning can help to reduce dust and keep an even temperature. A fridge that is dirty uses up energy because it overheats, and is inefficient. If your fridge is producing more noise than normal or when you suspect it's running out of energy due to overworking it might be time to have it checked out.

Dust does not drift into the air from outside as it is thought to be. It contains resuspended soil from the home that is often contaminated with lead and other toxicants in addition to pollen, mold spores and car exhaust. It also contains a number of legacy pollutants, including DDT which was banned 50 years ago.

Some compounds, like flame retardants, such as decabromodiphenylether, volatilize into the air. However, the majority chemicals in dust originate from objects that have been knocked off, for example, electronic equipment. High-molecular-weight substances, such as surfactants used in cleaners and paint strippers, also migrate directly into dust.

In addition to contaminating food items in the refrigerator, a smoky refrigerator Frydge can also affect your health. It can harbor allergens like pet dander and droppings from cockroaches, which can cause asthma attacks and allergic reactions. It also can contain bacteria spores, like staphylococcus aureus, that can cause infections if they find their way into a wound.

Researchers have discovered that contaminated dust is linked to a wide range of health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease leukemia and inflammatory bowel disease. Recent research has revealed that the dust in the homes of children with leukemia had higher levels of PCBs as well as PBDEs and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

Condenser Coils

If refrigerators are functioning properly, the coils located on the back and front of the appliance are supposed to be able to disperse the heat created by the compressor. If these radiator-like components are covered with pet hair, dust or lint the compressor has to work hard trying to cool the refrigerator and wears down the appliance. It's important to keep your coils clean.

If you're looking to do the work yourself it is recommended you unplug the refrigerator from its outlet and shut off the power source prior to beginning. This can reduce the risk of electrocuting yourself or family members while working on the appliance. If you're allergic to dust it's a good idea for you to wear a mask for your face. Then, you'll have to find the coils. They are typically located in the rear of the fridge or at the front across the base of some models. If you're unsure of where to find them, consult your fridge's owner manual or frydge contact the manufacturer for more details.

Once you've located the coils, you will need to remove the access panel if you have one. You can then alternate between vacuuming the coils with a narrow hose attachment and then brushing them with a condenser coil cleaning brush. It is essential to take your time while doing this so that you don't bend or damaging the coils. After you're done you can replace the kick panel or push the fridge into position and plug it back in.

You can hire a professional if you're not comfortable doing it yourself. It's cheaper and less hassle to simply keep up with the routine of cleaning to stop the problem from happening in the first place.

Maintenance

Refrigerators are powerful appliances that operate all day long to cool your food. They need regular maintenance to ensure they do their job effectively. Simple preventive maintenance can keep your machines running efficiently for a long time.

The gaskets may become clogged with jelly and other food items that stick which allows cool air to escape through tiny holes. Clean them off using a mixture of baking soda and warm water on a toothbrush or sponge every few months.

The fan in the rear of the refrigerator is a different location to look at. It can be noisy if it's clogged with paper, insulation or even mouse. Take the shelves off, unplug the refrigerator, and take out all the parts that are removable. Clean the coils and the space surrounding them with an air cleaner and the hose attachment. Make sure that you switch off the fridge after you have finished.

You should check the owner's manual for details on where to find the coils, the fan, frydge and the tools to clean it with. It is also recommended to review the warranty to be sure you know what's covered.
